Cult Fiction DVDs

February 25th, 2008
Written By: John Allison

I was browsing around checking out upcoming DVD releases and I discovered a pretty cool collection of movies that are going to be released on March 4th. Each of the movies could be considered a cult favorite on some level. There are a couple (Fitzcarraldo and Living Dorks) I have not seen before and one (CHUD) that is just dying for a rewatch.

I do not think there is anything special about this release of DVDs but if you don’t already have these movies I can think of worse things than picking them all up. The eleven of them sitting together on a shelve would look pretty impressive and it you could have one hell of a cult film festival.

Chud Class of 1984 Fitzcarraldo

You can check out the rest of the covers for the DVDs behind the cut.

Kidnapped Night of the Living Dorks Long Good Friday
The Man Who Fell to Earth Quiet Earth Return of the Killer Tomatoes
Road Games Wickerman

  1. Wow, although I must point out it is an odd collection. I mean, The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Wicker Man (two of my favourite films of all time) are regarded as classics in some parts. I’m not so sure that can be said of The Class of 1984 or Return of the Killer Tomatoes. As to The Wicker Man, I wonder if it’s the extended cut or the butchered version?

  2. Return of the Killer Tomatoes is one of my all time favorite movies. George Clooney’s work in this film is outstanding. It is a B-Movie classic! No real film collection worth its salt doesn’t have a copy.

  3. I am sorry (ashamed?) to say that I have only seen The Wikcer Man (which sorry, Mercurie, I hated - both original AND remake, although admittedly the latter was unbelievably worse) out of those. I have The Long Good Friday on DVD at home but just haven’t gotten around to checking it out yet. Fitzcarraldo I also have at home but it’s fairly long I believe so again I just haven’t gotten around to watching it yet.

I will add these to my rental queue asap (btw the name Night of the Living Dorks has got me interested right there:P)

And…Cult Classics? - Where’s stuff like Brazil, Big Trouble In Little China and to go a bit more modern (does 11 years make it a classic? Hmmm) The Big Lebowski.

  4. Wow, what a fun and bizarre collection! I remember seeing C.H.U.D. once on Halloween when I was young and it freaked me out! I’d love to revisit it someday.

Fitzcarraldo is on my to see list already, but some of the freakier ones I don’t think I could sit through again, like The Man Who Fell to Earth.

  5. There are some great titles there, most of which I haven’t seen. If the price is right, I could be inclined to picking up a few of these. Definitely love the fact that all of the covers match - makes for a nice aesthetic.

  6. This is a damn cool looking set, though I’m not sure I’m really interested in owning any of them.

Night of the Living Dorks is fun in a festival atmosphere, but not sure I recommend spending your time with it when so much other stuff is out there that is way better:

  7. TAlk about a wide variety of films! Fitzcaraldo and Long Good Friday are awesome movies, IMHO. I’d have to watch The Man Who Fell to Earth again…wasn’t all that impressed the first time around, but it’s been years.

  8. I love the covers, and love the eclectic philosophy behind the films (random!). I find it very strange that Fitzcaraldo, The Long Good Friday and The Wickerman are in the series.

  9. I was in the store today and noticed that they also have a copy of Heathers.

Unfortunately they did not redo the covers for the DVD cases. The covers that I showed were for the cardboard sleeves. They do look cool but if you don’t keep the sleeves then you just have 12 different looking cases.

  10. Oh and they were 2 for 20 at HMV.

  11. I’m going by HMV tonight. Thanks for the heads up John!

  12. I’m a bit bitter about the cases. I thought all 12 would look really cool. They are even numbered on the side of the slip. Its a shame they didn’t put the extra money into doing the actual case covers.

  13. Oh and I ended up buying Fitzcarraldo, Long Good Friday, Road Games and Kidnapped.

  14. You won’t be disappointed, John. Fitzcarraldo is such a bizarre story and if you’re a Kinski/Herzog fan, you’re going to love it.

And, of course, The Long Good Friday is one of my all-time favorite movies. Bob Hoskins is godly in it.

  15. I know I shouldn’t but I am still tempted to pick up all of them on DVD. My rule has been 10 bucks or under from now on and they are just fitting in and if I keep the sleeves they would look impressive on the shelf… which by the way is overflowing once again. Its a good thing I took a month off of buying DVDs. ;)

  16. worth it for QUiet Earth and Fitzcarraldo alone.

worth noting that once you pull the ‘pulp’ cardboard sleeve, you get the original DVD artwork, etc. inside (this was the case for the Man Who Fell to Earth). and the Fitzcarraldo DVD comes with all the same extras on Anchor Bay’s earlier release of the movie (as well as the extras on the Anchor Bay Herzog box set)…
