Roy Scheider, who appeared in so many iconic American films from the 1970s has passed on. Whether or not you remember him from Jaws, The French Connection, All That Jazz, The Naked Lunch or 52 Pick-up, the man had some seriously diverse taste for roles and projects. He was 75, but will remain immortal in a rich and varied body of work.
For me, the most fitting film to remember him is the Bob Fosse written, directed and choreographed All That Jazz, which like Robert Altman‘s A Prairie Home Companion, is like a living self-obituary. The fact that Roy Scheider fits so effortlessly into the role in that film, makes it easy to suspend disbelief and draw associations between the two.
A much longer (and better) obit can be found at the NY Times.

This is very sad news. Like most people, I came to know him thanks to his role in Jaws, but he was also great in All That Jazz and The French Connection, as well as 2010 (a movie that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves).
(2010 just unfortunately sits in the shadow of 2001 which is definitely a far superior film!) – I’d forgotten that Scheider was in that one though!
The first thing that pops into my head when I hear the name Roy Scheider will ALWAYS be 52 Pick-Up (then Jaws). I would watch that on cable late at night when my parents thought I was asleep. It was full of violence, swearing and boobs. Yeah, life was great as a 13 year old.
Kurt: I certainly won’t argue with you about 2001 being the superior film. In fact, 2001: A Space Odyessy is one of my all-time favorites. However, I always enjoyed 2010 as well…certainly a very different movie than the original, in both form and execution, but one that was nonetheless entertaining.
No disagreement here. Most films suffer by comparison to Kubrick
