Nerdcore IS Rising!
I want you to follow me down a little beaten path. Picture a man, on a stage, in front of hundreds of adoring fans. Picture him laying down the hip hop law. Now imagine that he’s a nerd.
If you can’t picture it, don’t worry. You don’t have to because you can actually see it for yourself.
I first heard about nerdcore from my little sister who’s into all things strange and bizarre in the music world and from the first moment I heard MC Frontalot, I was instantly hooked. It started off as a joke but truth is, it’s actually a lot of fun and yes, it even taps into my inner geek.
“Nerdcore Rising” is both the title of MC Frontalot’s debut album and the title of an upcoming documentary which is a mix of concert footage and talking heads and which, I assume, tries to explain where this subgenre of hip hop got its roots and why it’s such a growing success.
The film will have its debut at 2008’s SXSW Festival which is really fitting since the festival is as much about the music as it is about the movies.
I pray to all things holy that this manages to open in Vancouver down the road. It looks likely to be as much fun as Air Guitar Nation.
You don’t want to be the only guy/girl on the block who has no idea what on earth the kids are going on about so check it:

So, this guy is “White And Nerdy”? Or did Wierd Al Get there first with the parody, which is now transcending into some sort of nerd-chic?
On one level, The Beastie Boys have always flirted in this territory, since their first album.

Very true, but trust me, not to these depths. Just take a look at the lyrics of some of these songs.

These guys are like a different flavor of dementia: An interesting mix of filk, parody, and hip hop. I’d highly recommend checking out stuff by The Front, as well as MC Chris, MC Lars, Optimus Rhyme, and the great luke ski (who has a fantastic rap about Hamlet).
