• Canada’s Answer to Oscar: Genie Nominations

    I always moan and complain that Canadian film doesn’t get enough love and attention in Canada, never mind anywhere else in the world but it was a great year for film in general and a fantastic year for Canadian film (across the country and around the globe) and what better way to celebrate than with an awards show and party?

    All the nominees below. The Genies will be broadcast on March 3rd. This year’s show should be a little more exciting than usual considering most folks have heard of, if not seen, a large number of the nominated films.

  1. Mercurie says:

    As I have in the past, I agree with you that Canadian films don’t get nearly enough exposure. The sad fact is that of the films nominated for this year’s Genies I have only heard of five of them–and I am a film buff. I rather suspect the average American has only heard of Eastern Promises. I really wish Canadian films would get a lot more exposure than they have.

  2. Kurt says:

    Wheee. FIDO got a couple. Costumes, Original Score.

    Nice to see Ellen Page up for The Tracey Fragments, as well as love for Bruce MacDonald.

  3. Andrew James says:

    GORDON PINSENT – Away From Her = = NICE.

  4. andrew dykstra says:

    Away From Her was a fantastic, understated piece. hopefully the oscars will follow the SAG’s lead in giving the best actress statue to julie christie. i can’t remember the last film she did that captured her radiance as well as sarah polley did. ditto on andrew’s props to gordon pinsent’s nomination.

  5. Rusty James says:

    what’s the criteria for establishing a film’s “canadianess” ? A lot of Hollywood films are shot in Toronto and Vancouver.

  6. Kurt says:

    Shooting location is not the primary criteria. Obviously In The Name of the King is not a Canadian production, despite being shot almost entirely in Vancouver.

    Here’s the Genie Requirements from their Rule book:

    “Entrants are required to:
    i) Qualify as a Canadian film production or co-production — CANADIAN FILM
    One that satisfies the same criteria by CAVCO for qualification as a Canadian Certified production, and/or by the CRTC for qualification of a production as Canadian content, subject to eligibility restrictions outlined under Who Can Get an Award. (The Academy will supply these criteria in detail if required).

    ii) Have had its first commercial release in Canada in a theatrical venue according to the parameters outlined in Qualifying Screenings;

    iii) Have completed its Qualifying Screenings within the Eligibility Period according to the parameters outlined in Qualifying Screenings;

    iv) Not have competed for nomination in any previous Genie Awards, Gemini Awards or Prix Gémeaux.

  7. I love the Genies! I really hope they televise the actual show this year instead of doing the wierd “From the Red Carpet” chat with folks after they’ve won that they have had the past 2 years.

    I am thrilled to say I’ve seen 4/5 Best Motion Picture, and plan on getting out to the last one soon. Ironically I’ve seen 0/5 for the Oscar best picture noms.

    Go Canadian film!! yay!!!

  8. I’m with you Shannon. I’d much prefer to see the actual awards show and hopefully, Canwest will see to it that it gets aired. Fingers crossed!
