Captain JJ Abrams and his Enterprise

by Andrew James
January 17th, 2008

Being the geeks that we are, it’s hard to totally disassociate ourselves from the Star Trek universe. So in light of that, I came across the first image of the Enterprise being used in the upcoming Star Trek 11 film over at moviefone. Doesn’t look much different from any other Enterprise of the past, but hey, it’s cool right?

  2. Swweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Don’t get to see a lot but it (surprise!) gets me mildly excited about the project.

  3. If the rest of the movie turns out to be as good as that still, then I don’t mind eating crow on this one.

But I still think that j.j.’s Star Trek movie is destined to be a laughing-stock.

  4. It’s so hard. This is written by the writers of Transformers. It’s being directed by the guy behind stupid stuff like Alias. It stars some pretty dubious actors, in roles that seems completely strange (specifically Karl Urban as Bones I can’t wrap my head around). But at the same time… It’s Star Trek. I can’t quit it. I can’t help but be extremely excited that Star Trek is going to be back on the big screen. And it looks high-profile, and high-budget.

I do miss the Enterprise so very much, and so does the world. I definitely think that if Star Trek had still been on the air in one of the Gene Roddenberry-originated incarnations, 9/11 would not have happened, and the middle-east would be close to peace by now.

As bad as the people behind the camera are, they are better than the Stuart Baird/John Logan team-up they got the last time around. I don’t know… I hope that this will be good. I can’t take anymore heartache.

  5. I’m with ya Henrik. I so want this to work but I’m not expecting much. The best that can happen now is that they’ll surprise me.

  6. BTW, just found a bunch of interviews with the Star Trek cast and wow. I’m a little worried. I’ve only seen the Jennifer Morrison one and though I can appreciate the amount of secrecy associated with the project, I’m concerned that it’ll bite into the quality of the film.

  7. I think Karl Urban just might prove to be a bit of casting genius. He perfectly captures Bones’ earthiness.

  8. I have never been a fan of the Star Trek franchise, but the fan girl part of me is squeeeing over Simon Pegg as Scottie!

  9. Well Rusty the only experience I have with Karl Urban is in shit like Chronicle of Riddick and The Two Towers, so maybe my reference point is kind of wack. Has he done anything decent? I know he was in Pathfinder as well, but I never got to see that, and I heard it was pretty bad too.

The Simon Pegg thing also seems extremely strange to me. I mean he is definitely somebody that brings a ton of baggage to his presence on screen, and won’t the different images of him and Scotty just clash together and seem like a weird mutant-baby? I worry…

  10. Yeah, Urban hasn’t exactly been the shinning example of being in good films.

    Pathfinder (2007) - crap.
Out of the Blue (2006) - never saw it but sounds promising!
Doom (2005) - fun bad movie
The Bourne Supremacy (2004) - don’t remember him in this

  11. He was great in Bourne 2. He was terrible in The Chronicles of Riddick.

  12. i see very little to get excited about to be perfectly honest. nothing hear screams to me “good” or “quality”

  13. I have to admit that I want this to work, but I’m not sure it will. My big fear is that they are really going to play fast and loose with Star Trek continuity.

  14. Hell, I’m such a fan of the series, and was so let down by the last two films, that I’m hoping beyond hope for this to work in a big way.

The picture looks great…let’s hope the film matches it!

  15. It’s interesting to look at the writing credits on IMDB. The writers have worked on Transformers 2007, The Island, Mission Impossible 3, and on the TV side, Alias, Jack of All Trades (so they’ve written for “The Chin”), and Hercules/Xena.

There’s a chance they’ll blow it completely, but I’m expecting something fun in the viewing moment but very forgettable when I’ve left the theatre. A part of me is hoping beyond hope for a home run, but I’m doing everything possible to crush it and lock it away in my deep sub-conscience.

don’t think they will be putting those glowing mentions on the trailer, yikes! wow, that is a lot of shit compounded into one writing team… and people still have hope?

  17. Just in case anyone’s interested, a bootleg of the teaser has popped up online. Check it out here.

I can’t vouch for how good it is (I’m going to wait for the nice version) but I did watch long enough to know it’s still up!

  18. rot: It’s Star Trek. How can my heart not hope?
