Pennysaver Alert: Japanese 6-Disc Grindhouse DVD Box Set

by Marina Antunes
January 3rd, 2008

Grindhouse Japanese DVD PosterHoly mother of God. See? I knew there was a reason for not buying the individual Grindhouse DVD’s!

I was just catching up on my movie news reading since I unplugged for most of the holiday season, and I came across a post over at /Film about a 6 disc box set which I think I need to invest in.

Check it:

Disc 1: Death Proof (Extended Film)

-Staff/Cast Profiles (Text)
-What is Grindhouse? (Text)

Disc 2: Planet Terror (Extended Film)

-Japanese Subtitles
-Rodriguez commentary
-International/Japanese trailers
-Staff/Cast Profiles (Text)
-What is Grindhouse? (Text)

Disc 6: Japanese Exclusive Grindhouse bonus disc (106 minutes)

Yeah….I’m ready for it. If you haven’t already, this may be the time to invest in one of those multi region DVD players…

I can’t find a listing for it on YesAsia (though they do have a listing for a 4 disc box set) but you can order it from Amazon.jp (if you want to make sure you’re ordering the right thing, you may want to check out the poorly translated version of the page here) or you may want to try out CD Japan.

Happy shopping!

  1. I bought the 2 separate disks and I don’t feel at all bad about the fact that I’m going to buy this also. Grindhouse needs all the love it can get.

The best part about the set is that I’m sure it will have some pretty cool packaging.

  2. I love that the poster says “ALL TWO IN COLOR” - was this on the original poster? I don’t think so.

    Comment by Kurt Halfyard — January 3, 2008 @ 1:09 pm

  3. You might also want to check out YesAsia for this coming up.

    Comment by John Allison — January 3, 2008 @ 1:13 pm

  4. @ Kurt - No, I don’t think so either. But I’d love it if this was the DVD cover.

@ John - Yeah, I’ll be keeping an eye over there in the next few weeks. I’m hopeful it’ll go up shortly.

  5. I. WILL. OWN. THIS.

Don’t care what it costs. Disc 5 is worth the money alone.

    Comment by Andrew James — January 3, 2008 @ 1:35 pm

  6. By chance does anyone know if it will have Japanese text on the packaging? If so I’m not buying it from Japan.

    Comment by Ross Miller — January 3, 2008 @ 1:42 pm

  7. I actually find the Asian text on boxes to be pretty cool actually because no one else will have it. Of course this is mute right now since the packaging hasn’t been shown yet.

  8. I’ve never been interested in seeing the movie, but that’s one freaken awesome set.

I have a Region 1 DVD player that I was able to program to play DVDs of all regions. Still, I don’t really care about this one.

  9. Can anybody perhaps give a direct link to a page where I only have to click buy now or something? I’m extremely pensive to go exploring in a new language.

I’d love this set, but I want the front to be in english as well though…. *Sigh* What the fuck is up with these assholes not just releasing it to the world?

  10. please tell me there’s a shot in hell of this becoming available in the U.S.

  11. I seriously doubt this exact version will show up in the States but you can always just order it from one of the sites that Marina posted or by the YesAsia link I provided.

    Comment by John Allison — January 4, 2008 @ 9:08 am

  12. @Henrik: Check out the YesAsia link in my first post. Everyone should remember though you will need a multiregion DVD player. You can also buy those at YesAsia or often in a Chinatown in a large city.

I have a computer hooked up to my TV to play my non-North American DVDS.

  13. That is some fantastic news! I can only hope we get something similar over here.

    Comment by Nicki — January 7, 2008 @ 12:12 pm

  14. Oh great find John. I couldn’t track it down at YesAsia but looks like you found it. I’ll be placing my order sooner rather than later.

  15. Delicious Inside Pictures of Japanese set:

I love the DVD design of looking like 45s Singles. Looks like a real show-piece for the DVD collection. Too bad about the $100 price tag.

  16. I checked out the larger size image which I found from a link over at Twitch:

  17. And I know I said I wouldn’t buy any more DVDs but it sure is tempting. I love the look of it.

  18. Three weeks of saving expendable funds should cover it. I’ve got to have it…it’s all part of the addictive personality thing.

  21. Lol. Tbh I ddnt even see the free world delivery i was just blown away buy the price!

Still i think i would rather get the UK version or even the USA version….if they do decide to bring on out.

  22. Does anyone here know from experience with other countries dvds if you turn on the origin country’s language track if the disc plays the subtitles in the language of the country you bought it in (in this case Japan)? And can this feature be shut off?

This might sound like a bit of a newbie question, I’m aware, but that’s because it IS a newbie question. I’ve never bought a dvd from another country before. This will be my first….of many to come.

    Comment by Matt — March 12, 2008 @ 10:11 am

  23. Hmmmm that may be one for Kurt or John. My limited experience with Asian imports has been menus with enough English that I can turn on/off the subtitles.

    Comment by Marina Antunes — March 12, 2008 @ 10:54 am

  24. My copy of this absolutely gorgeous 6 DVD set arrived on Monday, March 24th, via CD Japan.

It’s worth every penny! I’ve been in total immersion mode since Monday — watching the full 3 hour feature version — and going through extras. Next up are the individual, extended cut, versions of each feature. The design and packaging are superb — and as noted above the care extends to the 45 RPM design of the individual discs.

The most fun I’ve had with a DVD box set since the Gamera Z-Plan box.

    Comment by Matt — March 27, 2008 @ 1:35 pm

  25. Awesome. Thanks for the update! I will be getting my hands on this very soon if I can scrape together the dough.
