• New Photos From The Time Traveller’s Wife

Here are a load of photos from the upcoming The Time Traveller’s Wife starring the always adorable Rachel McAdams and the beyond his years talented Eric Bana. The basic jist of this romantic sci-fi drama, which is based on the Audrey Niffenegger novel of the same name, is that a charming Chicago librarian named Henry De Tamble (Bana) has a gene that involuntarily and unpredictably causes him to travel through time. During one of these travels, he meets the young, rich Clare Abshire (McAdams) and they, of course, fall in love. To put it as simply as possible, the man’s time travels take him to Clare at different ages and periods of her life, but while she is on the normal, “correct” timeline, De Tamble is not, causing the pair to often be out of sync. As you can imagine, this puts quite a stress on their relationship, especially because De Tamble keeps coming in and out of Clare’s life.

I’ve always been fascinated with the concept of time travel and am a huge fan of movies that tackle the issue right (Back to the Future, The Time Machine [1960], Frequency, The Terminator, 12 Monkeys, etc.) although there are plenty that stink up the screen (i.e. Timeline, etc.). It’s particularly interesting when the time travel involves romance (I did like the part of the Guy Pearce The Time Machine remake where he became obsessed with saving his dead wife), because it opens up plenty of questions about the power and magic of love, something that can be very interesting in tales of time travel. Unless it’s the power and magic of love that involves Marty McFly kissing his own mother – that’s just weird.

Really though, McAdams is one of my favorite young actresses out there and Eric Bana makes my exclusive, tough to get on list of man-crushes (can’t wait to see Romulus, My Father whenever it makes its way stateside – I can’t get enough of him after seeing his brilliant, brilliant work in Munich). Did I mention this co-stars Ron Livingston, who is the man?

I’m a very tough sell when it comes to romances, but if anyone can pull it off, these two can, especially since McAdams already did it once to me with The Notebook (okay… did I seriously just admit publicly that I enjoyed that? So sue me, Ryan Gosling is über cool). My only reservations are that it’s directed by the man that brought us Flightplan, although I’m going to say that the problem there was more the script than the man behind the camera. Thanks to Just Jared for these photos.

Nice. I’ll warn you though, unless you were forced to study Raimond Gaita, or read his memoirs/biography in Highschool (which I understand is a requirement in Australia), this is going to be a tough slog. While the film is pretty beautiful, it’s relentlessly depressing (which is strange for a ‘feel-good Oscar-y type film’.

I caught this at Toronto and I was not impressed, even though the performances, (Particularly from Martin Csokas and Franka Potente –Bana is always great–) were quite good.

    Lower Expectations.

Hey, no need to apologize, I quite liked “The Notebook” as well. And when it comes to man-crushes, Gosling is right up there for me.

As for time travel movies, I’m right there with you. I love the subject and it can be done over and over and over again and I’ll be interested – even the short films that tackle it. Even if the films aren’t that great, the idea is almost always intriguing (Premonition).

Consider me warned, Kurt. Before this movie, I never even heard of Raimond Gaita. It still really looks just like my cup of tea, which I happen to take with two cubes of relentless depression when I can… but seeing as you’re the first person I know to have seen this and you didn’t like it, consider my expectations lowered… at least a little bit.

And yes, Gosling in The Notebook inspired me to grow a beard someday.

Wow, I just finished this book and I’m VERY, VERY impressed. I’d go on, but I doubt anyone else has read it. If you’re at all intrigued with time travel like myself or if you’re a sucker for some well-written, realistic, unsappy romance, this is a MUST READ.

And there was some perfect casting here with McAdams and Bana. This is now easily a movie I’m looking forward to more than almost any other (save Indy Jones, The Road, Burn After Reading).

Hehe. Good timing. This is next on my TBR pile.

hi,i read the book a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it,though i dont know how well they can pull it off in a movie but well fingers crossed.

    • Andrew James says:

Totally agree faiza. I have a real bad feeling this movie is going to be ass. I like McAdams in the role, I think she fits my idea of Claire exactly. Not completely sold on Bana though. Which is weird because I generally like Bana and not so much McAdams.

But more than that the story is too big in scope to work in 120 minutes. Definitely fingers crossed though. I finished the book and turned right back to page and started all over again.
