It’s no secret that most of us around here are big fans of the contemporary western. From Tombstone to Unforgiven to Open Range and everything in between, we are loyal fans; even if the general movie going public is not.
With that, here come two of the more prolific westerns that graced our screens in 2007; both being released on DVD within about a month of one another. The first, 3:10 to Yuma releasing on Jan 8th:

Standard:
- 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer
- Dolby Digital 5.1 EX Audio
- Destination Yuma
- Outlaws, Gangs & Posses
- An Epic Explored
- Deleted Scenes
BluRay (includes everything above plus):
- 1.78:1 Widescreen Transfer (1080p)
- PCM 7.1 Audio (Uncompressed)
- 3:10 to Score
- Sea to Shining Sea
- A Conversation with Elmore Leonard
- The Guns of Yuma
- Inside Yuma
- Theatrical Trailer
Then, releasing on February 5th, comes what is probably the best film of the year, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (R3 review). While I really encourage people to check this one out, it looks like it’s just a bare bones release (meaning no special features whatsoever). Which pretty much guarantees a gorgeous, well packaged, special edition version to be popping up sometimes early next summer that will be loaded with features. I’m inclined to tell you to wait for that one (just a guess on my part though). Anyway, thanks to our own Jonathan Burdick for the heads up, here’s the cover art for the bare bones release early next year:

You can ALSO count me in with the good people of RowThree.com as fans of the contemporary Western. Thanks to Kurt I am now a fan of the genre in general (as I wasn’t previously) after my viewing of Once Upon A Time In The West. I loved The Proposition and Three Burials and 3:10 To Yuma was a great film.
But The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford IS the best film of 07 (although not my favourite). Unfortunately it will be later than February 08 for us Brits to get it on DVD but I will DEFINITELY be first in the cue to buy it when it does.
I’m thrilled to see the resurgance of westerns in the past few years, they often have interesting stories, great characters and fantastic atmosphere. I plowed through a whole bunch in November and liked more are more of them.
I thought the 2007 version of 3:10 to Yuma was a solid and enjoyable film, but I have to say The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford would have to be one of my least liked from 2007. Sure, Casey Affleck was awesome but that wasn’t enough to keep me from being bored most of the time. People really do seem to love it or hate it, which always provides interesting discussion if nothing else…
I’m a fan of any kind of western, there’s no doubt about it. It’s kind of an obsession. I also second that The Assassination of Jesse James is the best film of the year (that I’ve seen at least… I have a feeling There Will Be Blood might be the only one to give it a run for its money). As for 3:10 to Yuma had a lot of problems, but I still had a great time watching it.
Now The Assassination of Jesse James, I definitely realize it’s not for everyone, but I never for one instant found myself bored. I can think of very few times in my entire life that I was so completely immersed in a film I was watching.
Count me in as well as a fan of the modern Western. Loved Open Range (that ending shootout was just brutal) and Tombstone is a well worn fave of mine.
Can’t wait to see 3:10 to Yuma as I didn’t see it in the theatre. Was sick most of the running time it was in theatres around here, but I’ll make up for it on DVD.
It’s so funny…everyone i talk to hasn’t seen assassination of jesse james…but everyone wanted to…they just didn’t get a chance.
if this movie re-appeared in theaters i think it could do good things, it’s too bad.
Has anyone seen Seraphim Falls?
I liked Seraphim Falls quite a little bit until the ending. Didn’t care for the ending. Nope.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Sadly, I missed both the new version of 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. In the case of the former, it was released just as my work was entering its busy season. As to the latter, it never came to any of the nearby cinemas (you would think a movie about Missouri’s patron saint and starring a Missourian, no less, would play here in Missouri…). I’ll definitely pick up both DVDs, even if The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a bare bones release.
Thx Andrew. It’s on my DVD queue. I liked the trailer and someone somewhere said Pierce Brosnan’s performance is really good.
I really enjoyed Assassination and it’s one I’ll be adding to my collection but I missed 3:10 to Yuma so I look forward to checking that out on DVD in the new year.
