• My Name is Bruce Trailer

Woot, the firewall at my work seems to be down right now and therefore I am able to bring you the first My Name is Bruce trailer.

All I have to say is that this sure looks like fun.

Trying too hard, poor screenplay (at least the trailer gives that vibe) and ultimately, pandering to the audience. I’m not amused.

  2. John Allison says:

    Speaking of trying too hard:

Man with the Screaming Brain – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365478/

I think it will be a fun throw away comedy. The one thing I think that would have made it a lot better is if they had Bruce Campbell just be Bruce Campbell. As it is from the trailer it looks like the turned him into a comic joke.

I’m still pumped though. I’ll watch anything with him in.

  3. Kurt says:

I saw Screaming Brain in a bin for $5 and I couldn’t even muster up the enthusiasm to buy it. So there it sat.

I like when Bruce gets in with some talented directors who understand the joke, but don’t need to pander to the audience. The best example would be Sam Raimi both pre- and post- SPIDERMAN of course, but Coscorelli’s BUBBA HO TEP, Lucky McKee’s THE WOODS and even the Coens in THE HUDSUCKER PROXY (and FARGO) know how to properly make use of The Chin.

Now, I’m off to watch CONGO for that amusing opening scene.

  4. Andrew James says:

Isn’t pandering to the audience the whole point of this? What other point would there be to a movie called “My Name is Bruce” starring Bruce Campbell? This is a movie specifically for the fans.

  5. Colleeny says:

I am so excited about this film. How could I not be. Will it be cheesy? Yes! Will it be an Oscar worthy performance? No! Will it be a film where Bruce Campbell is awesome? Most likely.

Fargo isn’t a good example of how to use the Chin. It was stock footage from the tv series “generations” (I might be wrong on the name). You can barely see him in the grainy screen, and you can barely hear him.

I was actually shocked a while back when I realized a movie I liked and had seen dozens of times had the chin in a fairly large role. “Escape from LA” has the chin playing the role of the surgeon general of beverly hills. They have so much prosectics on him you can barely reconize him or his voice. Not a great usage of My HERO!

  6. John Allison says:

Shite, Campbell is in Fargo. I don’t even remember that. Now I’m going to have to go watch it again.

  7. Jonathan says:

In all honestly and despite my inner-fanboy, I admit, this looks pretty terrible. Yet… I’m going to revel in the terribleness of it all and enjoy every minute of it. I was definitely expecting a different vibe to it all though, I admit.

As for Bubba Ho-Tep, that’s one movie I adore almost more than any other. I love it more every time I watch it.

  8. Marina Antunes says:

I’m with Andrew – this is clearly made for the fans and I’m OK with someone pandering to me. I’m not completely sold on this being an instantly quotable The Chin classic but it certainly has potential: “You guys ready for some violence?” – That totally sounds like something Whedon would write.

I just had a thought: Bruce in a movie written by Joss Whedon and directed by John Carpenter. Can you see it? Can you see it?

  9. Jonathan says:

I hope to never see that, Marina! Whedon’s dialogue is mind-gratingly awful. Buffy, Angel, Serenity, everything of his… I just can’t stand the guy’s sense of humor.

  10. Colleeny says:

Marina… Please stop! Having you plant ideas in my head like that while Im at work is completely unfair. The Giant Whoot I just let out, made everyone in the tech office stand up and peer at me over the cubical walls.

Whedon, and Carpenter, and Campbell…oh my

  11. Marina Antunes says:

@ Jonathan – and that is where we differ. I love Whedon’s style of dialog and though I was never a big fan of either Buffy or Angel, I’ve enjoyed “Serenity”, Firefly, the Buffy movie and even “Titan AE”.

@ Colleeny – I’m happy to fill your brain with unimaginable goodness!

  12. Andrew James says:

    “I’m sorry. Was that un-Reashed?”

Jonathan is high. All the charm of Serenity/Firefly and Buffy is the dialogue. “Attention everyone, this is your captain speaking. We’re going to be experiencing some slight turbulence and then… explode.”
    - Nathan Fillion (Serenity)

As for Chin quotes in this:
    “Hooch for the Pooch.”
    or
    “Keep them doggies rollin’”

  13. Jonathan says:

Haha. I’ve learned over the years that arguing with someone about Whedon is about as pointless as arguing with someone from the Church of Tarantino. I just find Whedon’s dialogue obnoxious and the jokes too obvious and devoid of any real wit. And I really wanted to like Serenity, because deep down, I’m a nerd for sci-fi (plus it’s a sci-fi western!)… but I just found myself cringing and rolling my eyes way too often.

With that said, I’ve never actually watched Firefly, but I have a feeling if I don’t like Serenity, I won’t like that either.

  14. Matt Gamble says:

Trying too hard, poor screenplay (at least the trailer gives that vibe) and ultimately, pandering to the audience.

Isn’t this every Bruce Campbell movie?

  15. Kurt Halfyard says:

Touche Matt, but I think there is a problem with your police work there. I’d hardly say Evil Dead II is a pandering kind of film, it has its own zany agenda. Maybe a little bit with Army of Darkness (I prefer EDII). Dunno tho, you may be right.

I’m a fan of the Chin, but not so fanatic that I can smell crap when it is blowing in my direction. — Case in Point, MAKE LOVE, THE BRUCE CAMPBELL WAY, was an embarrassing read. I almost felt sorry for the author it is so sadly unfunny.

  16. Matt Gamble says:

I don’t know, ED1 certainly had a cult following, and ED2 was their third try at the same film. I think you can’t help but pander a bit at that point.

It’s them doing it with a loving wink to their audience that makes his best films stand out, but I must agree that this one doesn’t quite seem to have that vibe.

  17. Andy says:

I don’t think this is going to be up for best picture next year.

  18. Marina says:

True, but it still looks like it could be fun! ;)
