On the surface, it may seem weird that a woman is so completely obsessed with a book and movie which is targeted at a teenage demographic but there are some things I can’t seem to grow out of and teen fiction seems to be one of them.
Earlier this year I devoured Stephanie Meyer‘s trilogy of books about a young woman, Bella, who while spending the summer with her dad in the small town of Forks, falls madly in love with Edward, a young man who happens to be a vampire. Not new, I know, but what makes Meyer’s books such an enjoyable read are her characters and she certainly has the voice of a teen girl down packed.
As much as I enjoyed the books, I wasn’t particularly interested in seeing a movie. That remained the case until news came out earlier this year that Catherine Hardwicke, of Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown fame, was on-board to direct. Not exactly an untried director and to boot, one that appears to have a good eye for capturing teens out of control.
A few weeks ago it was announced that Kristen Stewart had been cast in the lead role of Bella and it now appears that the object of Bella’s misplaced passion has also been cast. The Hollywood Reporter has news that Robert Pattinson will play the role of Edward. Not exactly my first choice, or the author’s for that matter, but he certainly looks like he could fit the part.
I know that on the surface this seems like a fairly mediocre movie not intended for an audience of my age but I can’t help but think back to how much I’ve enjoyed most of Hardwicke’s other work. She also appears to be fairly selective about her work so I’m hopeful that she’s said yes to this because she sees more than just a supernatural teen romance. I’m sure it’s going to be angst ridden, angry and probably smarter than anyone expected it to be. Count me on board.
