Almodóvar and Cruz Re-Team
This news is likely to make for some very happy film fans.
According to Cineuropa, Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz are re-teaming for another film but not the originally announced La piel que habito. Instead, Almodóvar will be working on a 1950s-style noir film which will not be comedic but will have “some comedic elements”.
Other than the fact that the film will be titled Los abrazos rotos (Broken Hugs), and will also star Blanca Poritillo (Volver) and Lluís Homar (from Bad Education), nothing more was revealed about the project.
I’m happy to hear that Almodóvar is taking a bit of a different direction with his next film but I’m particularly curious to see how, or even if, this project will incorporate his recent obsession with women. How is this going to play in a 1950s noir film? Will we have a heroine gumshoe? I’m not sure but I’m willing to bet that at the very least, it’s going to be a nice looking film.

This is good news indeed! The more Almodóvar we can get the better. You’re right that his films are pretty femine – or at least incorporate stories revolving around women (or gays).
At any rate, I LOVED last year’s Volver. My wife did a fabulous job (Oscar nom’d!). It seems she works best when filming in her native tongue. I assume that once again working with Almodóvar will be the same. Can’t wait for more!
PS – I’ll be stopping by RowThree at least 26 more times today to look at the fabulous picture you’ve posted of my wife.

I have only seen one Almodovar film and that is the insanely sweet comedy Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). I still haven’t seen Volver but will endeavour to. Thanks for this news!

Besides Volver, I can strongly recommend “All About my Mother.” If you’re feeling adventurous, seek out “Talk to Me” or “Bad Education.” I still have a ways to go in my Almodovar training, but I’ll get through the filmography soon enough.

VOLVER made my top 10 list of 2006, and TALK TO HER made 2002′s list.
I would concur that ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER is a must-see. Another great Almodovar film is LIVE FLESH, with Javier Bardem.
I recently checked out DARK HABITS as well, which he directed in 1983. It’s a comedy about a nightclub singer who leaves society behind by hiding away in a convent. However, this particular convent, which is made up of drug addicts and lesbians, turns out to be a lot like the world the singer hoped she was through with. DARK HABITS is an earlier Almodovar film, but many of the elements that would become his trademark are present. If you’re a fan, it’s definitely worth a watch.

I was supposed to watch the stage adaptation of All About my Mother playing at the Old Vic here in the West End and missed it altogether now! I will go and have a look now that youve recommended it Drew.
