• Peter Jackson to Direct The Hobbit… in 3D

Peter JacksonUmmmm. I’m hoping this isn’t some sort of sick joke.

The folks at the very reliable MarketSaw have insider news that Peter Jackson has not only signed up to direct the long debated The Hobbit but that the story will actually be broken up into two parts. If that’s not enough, there’s also news that both films will be shot in 3D. Need more? Apparently New Line and Jackson will also be converting the Lord of the Rings trilogy into 3D for re-release in theaters between 2012 and 2014.

I’m not quite sure what to make of all this. Jim over at MarketSaw has always been very good with his news and I can’t imagine him posting this if it wasn’t true but I find it extremely difficult to believe that Jackson and New Line have buried the axe so quickly when, it seems like just months ago, they were at each other’s throats.

No mention on whether this will be live action, motion capture or animation though my money is on live action, especially if they intend on tying the second of the movies with LoTR but we’ll have to wait and see. I assume the studio will be making the big announcement soon.

I hope to gods that this is not some sort of joke, because if it is, then it is a very cruel one. As a big fan of LotR, I REALLY want to see Peter Jackson direct The Hobbit.

Do people not understand the wild shift in tone between Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit? If they stay true to the book on this one, people are going to be pissed off. And the last thing I want this in is 3D. Really, I don’t think that it is worth bothering with the Hobbit. I understand money has to be made and it’ too tempting not to do. But I don’t think the hobbit would make a particularly good film, and highly doubt it is worth the bother of making 2 (!!) films.

Will not some enterprising soul option and script and just damn well make some Guy Kay novels into films please!

I’ve heard the rumor of The Star Wars Trilogy being re-released in 3D as well. Now THAT would be a treat.

As for this, I’ve had my fill of LOTR. I won’t knock it, becasue I like it okay, but I definitely think it’s overrated. So I don’t need to see it again in 3D. But that’s just me. The legions of fans would love it I’m sure.

The Hobbit? Again, I’m in the minority, but I just don’t care that much. I’d go see it and I’m sure it would be a fine film, but I’m not too terribly excited. If it happens fine, if not, that’s fine too.

I am in agreement with you Andrew. I don’t hate the LOTR films but they are terribly overrated – particularly the third one. I like Fellowship the most and don’t care for The Two Towers (apart from Gollum/Smeagol of course).

As for the Hobbit, I am not terribly excited about a movie of it either. Like you Andrew I would see it and I’m also sure it would be a fine film but I don’t think there’s a big need for it.

And as for Jackson direting it, he did his job with LOTR but like Kurt said The Hobbit is a lot different and I’m not sure that Jackson is the right person to adapt it into a feature film. I would love to see someone like Terry Gilliam or even Michael Gondry have a crack at it (although I can goddamn guarantee that wonm’t happen…shame:(:P )
