The Other Boleyn Girl Movie StillIf there’s a period costume involved, I’m usually interested. It’s a little quirk of mine that I can’t seem to get over. Even the most outlandish costumes in the worst production tend to grab my eye. Then there are projects like the upcoming adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s best selling novel, The Other Boleyn Girl, of bodice ripping sex, intrigue, romance and ambition in Tudor England.
After seeing the first trailer I was rather surprised that Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, both of whom are amazingly gorgeous but nor particularly great actresses, came across as fitting the roles of rival sisters perfectly and actually looking like they were acting but I was concerned that the fantastic Eric Bana came across a little bland.
This morning I notice that there’s an international trailer kicking around as well and I have to admit that the little changes make a difference. The trailers are nearly identical but something about the editing of the international trailer actually makes everyone, including Bana, look great. Not that it would matter much to me, I’d see this even if there was no trailer but I will admit that this newest trailer looks great.
The Other Boleyn Girl opens on February 29th and I can’t wait!

Funny thing is that I love all three of those actors, but was nodding off before the trailer was finished. I think there is a good reason why this was pushed out of ‘prestige season’ this fall and into early 2008 (‘dumping season’) — I may be wrong, but those trailers did nothing for me.
I’m itching for a good costume Drama, and Elizabeth disappointed, but I don’t think this is going to redeem things for me. Maybe I should finally rent Perfume.
You still haven’t seen “Perfume”???? What on earth are you waiting for! Run, don’t walk, to the video store! I highly doubt this one will disappoint you.
I like Portman and I really like Bana, I will definitely see this one!
I’m with Kurt on this one … maybe it is just the trailer but it felt ‘slow’ (and not in a good way).
Definitely full of eye candy though: costumes, sets, Johansson, Portman, and I suppose we can throw in Bana for the ladies.
About your comment about the acting abilities of Johansson and Portman … personally I find that they are both hit and miss. When they are on they both can be brilliant but they have each dropped the ball on occasion as well.
I could go with that Dave. I actually liked Johansson in “Scoop” and Portman was excellent in “Free Zone”.
